Bottom line? There’s some features in GNOME that make my life easier, but I find I’m not missing anything when I go back to fluxbox. What don’t I like? The massive performance hit in I/O traffic and memory overhead. What do I like about the DE experience after more than a year with GNOME? MIME/Application associations, opening documents/media from the filemanager, and very little else. In other words, after playing with it for a couple hours, I knew just about all of its features. GNOME 2.6 was just out, and it was simple enough to keep in my head. But about a year and half ago I decided a DE would be nice (I guess) for my general purpose laptop. I still use a medium-to-heavyweight WM (fluxbox, PekWM, etc.) on my desktop and portable workstations. ![]() It took me a long time to justify why I would need a DE.
